Data, Variables and Methods

The data used for this research were collected in the summer of 2004 within the context of a larger research project on the 'acceptance of the welfare state' conducted at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) and funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. This survey was designed to assess attitudes of the German population towards the four major institutions of the German welfare state (old age pensions, health care, unemployment insurance, social assistance). The aim of the study was to construct a realistic and encompassing picture of the acceptance of the German welfare state and explore various explanatory factors. A total of 1,534 face-to-face interviews were completed. The sample was drawn using a random-route design.
